Learning music is like learning a new language. You move from absorbing technical elements such as words, sentences and grammar to expressing higher-level, creative thoughts in the form of poetry. In music, Sameer teaches students based on their level of mastery and maturity. At each level Sameer's experience as a performer (over 25 years) and as a teacher (10 years) brings depth and richness.
Beginners are exposed to a variety of Ragas, Taals and forms of composition. They acquire a breadth of knowledge, practice techniques and gradually absorb aesthetics of melody and rhythm. Group class sessions are recommended at this stage. In group settings the combined energy helps to push everyone further than when learning or practicing alone. Moreover, one learns a lot from fellow-students.
However, just learning different compositions is not enough. It is important to immerse oneself in the aesthetics of music. As a Guru, Sameer takes every intermediate-level student beyond books or notes and guides him or her in the individual journey toward expressing oneself through the medium of Raga. In smaller groups, students learn nuances of music and are trained to enhance vocal culture (elements such as stamina, flexibility for improvisation and expressive tone). They expand their listening repertoire as they interpret emotional content in music.
Advanced-level students are shown how to expand their creative horizons by creating interplay between melody and rhythm. With advanced-level students, Sameer's goal is to expand their imagination and empathy - for example how a Raga might evoke different emotions depending on how it is rendered, or how swar-lagaav shapes thumri and tappa differently. Internalizing Raga-roop and "putting it together" in performance takes patience and hard work.
